A very important ingredient required yet often neglected by one-too-many artistes and producers is the biography. As easy as it sounds, it is quite a very difficult task to conquer especially if your bio must turn out to be a killer bio! Your music bio is one of the several component parts of your dedicated musician press kit. Little do you know that a killer bio can actually speak volumes about you and your songs even before your target audience listen to your music – now you see why it is quite important to get this done and get it right!
Second, ensure to start simple and short – it is a bio and not a story, essay or exam (a short piece grabs the reader’s attention quickly)! Ensure each sentence is grammatically correct as this speaks about you; write complete sentences and no abbreviations or slangs. Always write as a third person/speaker, i.e. utilize pronouns such as “He/she/they in place of I”. Begin each sentence with a neutral yet factual tone. Exclude phrases that portray you as arrogant such as “incredibly influential, wickedly talented, extremely gorgeous, critically acclaimed, melodious voice and sound, the best musician, biggest artiste, etc.” – it is more dignifying for your fans, tv presenter or journalists to speak or write this about you!
Listen, the first paragraph must be juicy, yeah, the icing on the cake to keep the reader glued entirely. This implies that this first paragraph must include your genre and top achievements. Many artistes forget that the reader needs to see who they are reading about or building up interest in – you need a very good/clean/HD picture of yourself displayed as bio profile picture. The eyes appreciate good visuals when it sees one. Not restricted to that, you are also trying to gain fans from those who pick their artistes entirely based on looks. Speaking of bio-length, how long should it be? Well, there are no specific length since the achievements of several artistes differ from one to another, but you may limit your writeup between 100-500 words on average.
Don’t distort the truth in the bid to gain more favors or attention – this is a common mistake. You need not claim “a Grammy award winner or writer” when you aren’t – the internet never forgets; upon research and discovery that you lied in your bio; you tend to lose your value. Keep your bio fresh and regularly updated. Translate your bio into other popular languages to give room for foreigners who are interested in you too – be international! Avoid long lists of encomium, praises and past reviews/glories and always ensure you spell-check spellings. Finally, after the killer bio is set, where do they go? Place your bio on all popular social media platforms you are on such as Facebook, Resident Advisor, Instagram, Twitter, or perhaps your website (if any) and all streaming platforms such as SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Bandcamp, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Ensure you get verified on these platforms, so your fans can trust who they are following, good luck!
