There are 2 philosophies about dressing for a specific role. Some actors think they will look desperate if they dress for the role.
Wearing too much can insult the casting director as well. Casting directors know what a doctor, mechanic, police officer, etc... look like.
I generally will either give the casting director and director a feel for the character with my wardrobe choices, but don't spend a lot of time thinking about the clothes. For doctor roles, if it is a live audition, I will ask the casting director if I can wear a lab coat. I know I look like a doctor when I wear one. Depending on the setting and type of doctor, perhaps a suit is more appropriate.
The main thing to keep in mind is that you don't want to insult anyone by wearing too much of a costume. I would suggest that you at least don't dress innapropriately.
